Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains is a World Heritage Site and offers the opportunity to see nature at its best. The plant life varies from heavy tropical rain forest, bamboo forests, mountain cloud forests to alpine vegetation and the scenery is truly spectacular. Above 4,500 meters the snow and glaciers add that special dimension to the wondrous views throughout this pristine mountain range.

Day 1: KAMPALA TO KASESE

Pick up from Enteebbe Airport/Hotel and travel to Kasese for an overnight.

Day 2: OMU’KORUKUMI/KURUHE CAMP (1560M) – RWIGHO CAMP (2650M)

In the morning after taking breakfast, we drive for about an hour from Kasese town to
Okorukumi and proceed to the Parks / Kasanzi Gate for registration at the Park Ranger outpost.
Here after, take on the trail which bends west on the ridge overlooking the Kasuka and Isule
valleys and stop at Ekebitakuli for a hot lunch. After taking a breath, the hike continues through
the montane rain forest overlooking bamboo forested valleys. Along the way you see plant
species like the Disa stairssi, Scadoxus cyrtanthiflorus, Impetiens apiculata and spot or hear calls
of black and white Columbus monkeys, Chimpanzees and their nests, the Rwenzori Turaco Bird,
common bulbul,Eurasian bee-eater, yellow rumped tinkerbird,African thrush and other birds.
You grade into the heather zone and finally reach Rwigho Camp for an overnight. This will take
you between 6-7 hours.

Day 3: RWIGHO CAMP – KAMBEHO CAMP (3700M)

After breakfast, the trail continues through the heather trees (Ericaceous )with lots of moss hanging which looks like an old man’s beards. In this zone you see lots of heather trees, Asanasio trees, Alcamilla, black berries, gardens of giant lobelias, everlasting flowers and rock shelters and many more plant species and animals like black and white Columbus monkeys, Varvet monkeys, sun birds, the Rwenzori turaco a rare beautiful bird in the Rwenzoris, Yellow whiskered greenbul, African pied wagtail. Upon reaching Mitiyighaghire, lunch is served and
after about 20-30 minutes, the journey continues to Kambeho Camp for an overnight. This hike takes 5-6 hrs

Day 4: FROM JOHN MATTE HUT TO BUJUKU HUT, 3.962 M.

After morning breakfast, start with a climb along river Lhume, when still fresh and strong with urge to climb the only steep Mughuli bypass. As you think of slopping down to Lake Mughuli which is within MTN network coverage to give you a chance to call friends and family members about the beauty and experience encountered on the trail. There are several short peaks which one can easily climb depending upon what time you have arrived in the camp and how you feel.
The vegetation along the Lake is so beautiful to catch up your eyes. Animals you might see along the trail are the Rwenzori red-duiker, rock and tree hyrax and wild pigs. Around the camp, you can have a self guided walk to explore the water falls. The approximate time taken from Kambeho to Mughuli Camp is about 6-7hrs hike with a stopover for a hot lunch at Mulhalhama resting view point.

Day 5: MUGHULI CAMP – BUKURUNGU EAST CAMP (4291M)

This camp is set in the heart of the two mountains of the Portal Peaks and Mount Gessi; it is a relaxing point to acclimatize for those interested in climbing the Portal Peaks and Mount Gessi.

Five hours from Mughuli camp takes you through a very gentle crossing. Passing through the vegetation of the Alcamilla, giant lobelia and the wonderful unknown leaf looking like a human palm.

From Mughuli Camp to Bukurungu Camp will take you 6 -7hrs with a stopover for a hot lunch at Kinyamiyeye. On this day, during clear weather the weather you may view the main peaks of Edward on Mount Baker, Margherita and Alexandra on Mount Stanley, Vittorio Emanuela on Mount Speke, Kihuma on the Portal Peaks and Mount Gessi.

Day 6: BUKURUNGU CAMP – LAKE BUJUKU (3962M)

From Bukurungu camp to Lake Bujuku camp you will pass through the bogy gardens of tussocks that will give you an experience to jump from one tussock to another or fall the footsteps of the guide who has the experience to negotiate with the bogy surfaces. During this day you will be able to see the beautiful gardens of giant lobelia, asanasio black berries, wild carrots, Alcamilla, lake Bujuku, sun birds, red duikers, rock hyrax and more.

Depending on the weather, you may be able to view the peaks of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker and Mount Speke. You finally arrive at Lake Bujuku camp, 3.962 m. From Lake Bujuku, here starts the diversion for who intends to climb Mount Speke.

Day 7: LAKE BUJUKU – IRENE LAKE CAMP (4495M)

For those climbing Margherita, Albert and Alexandra peaks it is advised to proceed to Irene Lake camp (4495m) for overnight.
During this day, you will enjoy the beautiful mountain sceneries and the beautiful Bujuku valley where you will join the alpine zone and trek all the way up to the camp on the Margherita base.
Preparing for climbing Mt. Margherita next morning. During this day, it is advised to pack all the technical climbing equipments, warm gears, sun glasses, and take enough water because the camp is becomes too cold during the night and at times during the day due to the closeness to Margherita This day hike takes between 4-5 hours.

Day 8: IRENE LAKE CAMP – MT. MARGHERITA (5109M) – BIGO CAMP (3440M)

Early breakfast and start trekking towards Mt. Margherita. This is the technical point that needs following the advice from your guide. The hiking leads you to the rocky surface until you reach the steep climbing of Margherita glacier and then to Margherita peak. Take photos and then ascend back to Iren Lake camp for lunch and proceed to Bigo camp for dinner and overnight. This day is a long day that takes you about 8-9hours

Day 9: BIGO CAMP 3.440 M – IBANDA (1650M)

Leave Bigo camp early retracing out route to Mihunga park gate. Descend down through the 6-8 hours.
During this day, it takes you through the bamboo/memolopsis zone up to Kurt Shaffer bridge and then you start the forest zone.
This involves descending, steep slopes and rocks and wadding through this trail passing through mud, crossing rivers and deep mud to Nyabitaba camp for lunch and continue descending through Mubuku River and through forests canopy up to Mihunga Park gate Headquarters.

Day 10: Return

Travel from Kasese Town to Kampala/ Entebbe Airport for a flight back home
